About Us
We are Libera (Lee-BEH-rah). Our name comes from the Latin word liber and means free:
- Free from coercion
- Free from control
- Free from punishment
But for millions of women, girls, and people with the capacity to get pregnant around the world, that freedom remains out of reach. In too many places, decisions about the reproductive pathway continue to be determined by laws, institutions, and narratives that restrict autonomy, criminalize choices, limit access to rights and deepen historical inequalities.
True to our name, we exist to defend and fight for freedom.
We build upon the legacy of 53 years of Planned Parenthood Global-the international arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America-to advance our own proposal, centered on a new concept: reproductive dignity.
Our work draws on the lived experiences of our team and the communities we serve. We work from the Global South and alongside the Global South, our source of knowledge, leadership, imagination, and political action to transform systems of criminalization into systems of care and justice.
Our Mission
Our mission is to build collective power and strategies that move communities from reproductive criminalization to reproductive dignity.
Our Vision
Libera envisions a world where every person has the freedom to shape their life and future, free from violence, coercion, and punishment. In this world, the communities once most impacted by injustices shape the systems that govern their realities, affirming their rights and dignity.
Our unique approach: Reproductive Dignity
For us, reproductive dignity is both the goal and the approach.
Reproductive Dignity recognizes that real freedom is inseparable from the social, economic, political, and environmental conditions in which people live. There can be no reproductive dignity where violence, war, genocide, racism, or systems that punish and exploit instead of protect, exist.
Developed through collaboration with more than 100 leaders across Africa and Latin America, our approach is grounded in five interconnected dimensions:
- Self-determination
People have the fundamental right and agency to make decisions about their bodies, lives, and futures. - Recognition
People’s knowledge, identities, experiences, and choices are believed, valued, and honored. - Connection
People are supported through trusting, caring relationships that strengthen agency and well-being. - Security
People can exercise their choices free from coercion, violence, discrimination, and punishment. - Justice
People live within democratic systems and institutions that are equitable, accountable, and uphold their dignity.
When people can truly choose, are seen and valued, feel safe, and know they are not alone, they are more likely to stand with others to protect collective dignity, strengthen communities, and transform the systems that shape all our lives.
